A hollow sound when you tap a wall, a ceiling crack that keeps returning, or plaster lifting away in sections are all familiar signs of blown plaster. A neat patch over loose material may look acceptable for a week or two, but it will fail again if the background, moisture issue or bond has not been dealt with properly.

Use a scraper, bolster chisel or small club hammer to remove all loose material. Work steadily rather than striking hard. The repair should continue until the remaining plaster is solidly bonded. Once the loose plaster has been removed, brush and vacuum the exposed background. It needs to be clean, stable and free from powdery residue. Follow the product instructions on mixing, drying times and maximum thickness, as rushing this stage can lead to shrinkage cracks.
When the backing has firmed up, apply a finishing coat with a clean trowel. Work beyond the edge of the patch so the new material can be blended into the existing wall. This is where many DIY repairs become obvious after painting. The surface may feel smooth while wet, yet show ridges, trowel marks or a raised patch once light falls across it.
Allow the repair to dry naturally. Do not force it dry with intense heat, and do not paint until it has dried evenly. When patching is not enough
